Key Stage 3 students here at Headstart School follow a primary model which offers one lead teacher per small teaching group, ensuring a nurturing and stable environment. Students are supported in one area of the school which decreases the amount of change of teacher and transition between classrooms during the day. A varied and broad curriculum is offered including opportunities for academic and vocational elements to the day. Outside learning, Forest School and working with animals are just a few of the areas on offer that allows students to build their confidence and self-esteem, improve independent learning skills and facilitate team building and social interaction skills.
In our preparation and teaching, we aim to:
- provide opportunities for all students to learn and achieve;
- promote students spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development;
- Prepare students for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of adult life.
We consider the special nature of Headstart School, to be of particular value to KS3 students. Our ethos, values and aims are integral to the design of each individual curriculum plan; the priorities and emphasis we give to different subjects reflect our knowledge of the students’ needs. Whenever we can, we provide curriculum enrichment by arranging for different experiences or changing the balance.
We know from experience that the transition to adulthood isn’t easy for any child. So, we actually start the transition process when children reach 14. Together with you, we’ll think about the longer term and your child’s individual aspirations. And we’ll start to plan a smooth transition to post 16 learning and beyond.
